Step aside Pikachu, it’s time for the mystical time-traveling Pokémon, Celebi to step into the spotlight as the new go-to card in Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket.

Released in November 2024, Pokémon TCG Pocket is a mobile game where players can assemble a digital collection of Pokémon cards and battle with them. The developers released the game’s first expansion called “Mythical Island” on Tuesday. The new booster pack is like a miniature expansion to the game and adds more than 60 cards. More cards means new stunning art to look at, but the expansion also changes up the competitive scene. Now, Celebi ex has become the new go-to card.

Celebi ex is the voice of the forest and a downright cutie. It’s not exactly the most defensive card, as the psychic/grass Pokémon only has 130 HP. However, its potential offensive power is nothing to scoff at. It has one attack, Powerful Bloom, and allows the person who plays it to flip a coin for each Energy attached to it. Each time the person gets heads, Celebi ex does 50 damage. So if you have three energy attached to it, you’ll flip a coin three times and stack up to 150 damage if you get heads all three times.

This attack, combined with an ability from the new Serperior card, makes for a devastating combination in battle. Serperior has an ability called Jungle Totem and it provides two additional energy for every energy attached to your Pokémon. So if you add three grass energy to Celebi ex, Serperior will give you additional energy and allow you to flip the coin six times for Celebi ex’s attack. The more coin flips, the more chances to do damage and overpower high HP ’Mons. Just get the grass snake on the bench, and a Celebi ex in play, and you’re set to decimate your opponent.

Celebi ex is strong, but that doesn’t mean it’s unbeatable. As always, I’m sure some clever players will find a way to spoil this strategy. Still, it’s not a rock-solid (grass…) option if you’re looking to wrack up some wins. If you’re cracking open some new digital packs, keep your eye out for the ex-version of the little forest spirit.
