Netflix has announced the voice cast for its upcoming Terminator Zero anime, with Ahsoka star Rosario Dawson joining Timothy Olyphant alongside several others.
Dawson will lend her voice to a character named Kokoro, previously glimpsed in a set of first-look images. Netflix describes the ethereal being as "an advanced AI and Japan's answer to Skynet," which, if brought online, "must calculate for itself: is humanity the plague Skynet believes? Or are human beings worth saving?"
Other new additions to the cast include André Holland as central character Malcolm Lee, "a genius computer programmer and father of three," Sonoya Mizuno as Eiko, "a resistance fighter sent back in time to stop Malcolm from launching Kokoro," and Ann Dowd as The Prophet, "the philosophical guide for the human resistance."
They join previously announced Timothy Olyphant as the Terminator in a story that unfolds between two timelines in 2022 and 1997, following both the past and present of the AI Skynet's war against humanity. Olyphant's cyborg assassin hunts down Lee, who has to consider the moral complexities of his AI creation.
Created and executive-produced by Mattson Tomlin and animated by Production I.G, Terminator Zero is the latest entry in the blockbuster Terminator franchise but is the first iteration to be animated. The time-travelling tale comprises eight episodes, which will premiere on Netflix on August 29, aka "Judgement Day."
The first teaser for Terminator Zero didn't reveal any footage of the series, but it did remind viewers that there is no fate but what they make for themselves.
