A sequel to Amazon's Road House remake is in the works, with Jake Gyllenhaal reprising his role as Dalton.

Head of Amazon MGM Studios Jennifer Salke announced the news during the studio's inaugural upfronts presentation on May 14, confirming that Gyllenhaal would be back to pack another punch as Elwood Dalton in a sequel to 2024's Road House (a remake of the 1989 film of the same name led by the late Patrick Swayze).

Plot details are under wraps for now, but the first film saw Dalton, a former UFC fighter, take a job at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys, where he soon discovered things were not as they first seemed. Gyllenhaal was joined on the cast by Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, and Conor McGregor, starring in his feature film debut.

The movie was popular with audiences, pulling in nearly 80 million global viewers since its March 21 debut on Prime Video. Over 50 million people watched it during its first two weekends on the platform, making it Amazon MGM Studios' most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis, the studio has revealed.

Before going to streaming, Road House premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival, but director Doug Liman opted to boycott the screening in protest of Amazon MGM refusing to give the movie a theatrical release. He stressed that "if we don't put tentpole movies in movie theaters, there won't be movie theaters in the future."

IGN attended the event and gave the movie a 6/10, noting that "the original's bouncer-versus-businessman plot is refashioned and almost given some thematic weight," but the remake ends up trading "'80s earnest silliness with a Saturday-morning-cartoon tone that manages – barely – to overcome its flaws."
