It's common for books and movies to pull inspiration from real-life events. It's actually pretty standard, as plenty of fictional horror villains are based on real serial killers. That seems to be the case with David Fincher's 2014 critically acclaimed film Gone Girl, as the parallels to a real-life murder investigation are absolutely shocking.
