Next year’s third season of Vikings: Valhalla will also be the final season of the Netflix series, a conclusion which showrunner Jeb Stuart says “made sense story-wise for our Leif, Freydis and Harald's voyages to end with our third season.”
IGN can also exclusively reveal the first six images from Vikings: Valhalla Season 3, seen in the gallery below.
The images include the first look at actor-boxer Florian Muntean (Creed II and III, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) as George Maniakes, a general in the Byzantine Empire who answers only to The Emir. He is known as “Gyrgir” in the Scandinavian sagas.
In history, Harald Hardrada (played in Vikings: Valhalla by Leo Suter) served as chief of the Varangian Guard of the Byzantine Empire and fought alongside Maniakes in the campaign to reconquer Sicily.
The exclusive photos also include a first look at Goran Višnjić (The Boys, ER) as Erik the Red, the legendary Viking explorer who is the father of Sam Corlett’s Leif Eriksson and Frida Gustavsson’s Freydis.
Here’s the full statement from series creator Jeb Stuart on why it was the right time to conclude Vikings: Valhalla with Season 3:
“I am so grateful to have had three seasons to tell the stories of Leif, Harald and Freydis. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to show the evolution of how three of the most famous Vikings became the icons we know today and we have done just that.
I hope when the audience gets to see the new season, they'll be excited by all the new heights that we've taken these heroes. When we started this project 5 years ago, I worked hard with this incredible cast and crew to craft a journey that we all hoped would be satisfying.
Of course with real historical figures, there are always more aspects of their lives that could be explored, but it made sense story-wise for our Leif, Freydis and Harald's voyages to end with our third season. And we really cannot wait for the fans to see the conclusion of this chapter of history.”
Including Season 3, Vikings: Valhalla will have had a total of 24 episodes to tell its epic saga of some of history’s most famous Vikings.
Vikings: Valhalla’s third and final season will launch on Netflix in 2024.
