Bill & Ted stars Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves are teaming up once again for a Broadway production of Waiting for Godot.
Jamie Lloyd is directing the play, which was originally written by Samuel Beckett. Details on the rest of the cast and how they will bring the classic production to modern audiences are unknown, though it has been revealed that Reeves will play Estragon with Winter tapped as Vladimir (via Deadline). “It is a real honor to be collaborating with the brilliant Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter on Samuel Beckett’s sublime masterpiece — one of the greatest plays of all time,” Lloyd said in a statement.
Waiting for Godot tells its story in its name. It centers on Vladimir and Estragon as they pass the time while waiting for a person named Godot, hoping that their delayed arrival gives them the satisfaction they seek. It received a film adaptation starring Ethan Hawke, Wallace Shawn, John Leguizamo, and Tariq Trotter in 2021.
Winter and Reeves have most notably partnered on the Bill & Ted trilogy, which sees the duo going on time-hopping adventures through history. The series got its start with Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure in 1989. A sequel, titled Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey arrived a few years later, with both movies premiering long before Reeves’ career evolved in the late ‘90s. A long-awaited third film, Bill & Ted Face the Music, saw the pair reunite in 2020. When remembering his time on the Bill & Ted series during The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last week, The Matrix star said his memories of filming with Winter hold a special place in his heart.
“We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays,” Winter and Reeves said in a joint statement.
