When fans think of animation this day and age, it's either high concepts, elevated art or profanity-laced stories that try to tell nuanced adventures. Some, a bit too on the nose, when subtlety would work just fine. As good as it is, Rick and Morty is a prime example of going too heavy, as well as the likes of Solar Opposites. Coincidentally, Rick and Morty co-creator, Dan Harmon, has a project out with Nathan Pyle on the latter's webcomic: Strange Planet.
