As IGN’s Festival of Fear nears its end, we have a spooky exclusive to share with you: a creepy new clip from Episode 2 of the second season of the supernatural horror series 30 Coins. Watch the clip via the player above or the embed below. Episode 2 airs tonight, October 30th, on HBO and will stream on MAX.

In this scene, Padre Vergara (Eduard Fernández) is in Hell where he encounters the Aristocratic rulers of Hell on his way to meet with Lucifer. The Aristocratic rulers of Hell are a gruesome-looking lot of demons featuring an array of nasty designs both practical and CGI.

Spanning eight episodes, the second season of 30 Coins picks up shortly after the devastating events of the first season. Here’s the official synopsis to reveal more:

“Most residents of Pedraza, a remote town in Spain plagued by inexplicable, demonic events, have lost their minds and are confined to a psychiatric hospital. Elena (Megan Montaner) lies comatose in a Madrid hospital bed; Paco (Miguel Ángel Silvestre), shattered by remorse, tries to take care of her. As horror intensifies around them, our group of heroes must face a mysterious new enemy (Paul Giamatti) – someone so perverse that even the devil fears him.”

30 Coins director, co-writer, and executive producer Álex de la Iglesia recently chatted with IGN via e-mail about our exclusive clip, the demon designs seen it, and why Paul Giamatti’s big bad Christian Barbrow is such a huge threat this season. His answers are below.

SPOILERS AHEAD for Season One of 30 Coins!

IGN: Can you set up what we're seeing in this scene? What does Lucifer want from Padre Vergara and vice versa?

Álex de la Iglesia: Padre Vergara is suffering constantly in the first season. Now he's dead. Suddenly, we discover all the things we had in mind about religion, about heaven and hell, about Lucifer – they're true. It's not fiction. It's really like that. Hell exists and there are demons there that want to inflict pain all the time. Everybody has in mind that hell is like the Ed Gein house, for example. But that isn’t a global hell, that’s a particular hell, so we said, let’s make it like the Ed Gein house but in a big palace. That was the beginning.

Then we said, okay, but this isn’t quite like hell. Hell is more like Dante’s Inferno, so we need rivers of lava, and we need ruins of strange civilizations destroyed by demons. So we did all of that in one place. People would think it’s impossible to combine all of them because the character is moving around hell, but in this case, he’s confined to a building. The moment he goes to the balcony, he sees the full scope of hell.

IGN: Why does even the devil himself fear Christian Barbrow?

Álex de la Iglesia: Lucifer works for God, the master of the universe. His job is to control the drama. He creates the plot and orchestrates the drama, like a stage director. Suddenly, he has an actor who has nothing to do with the plot. He wants to go off-script. This guy doesn’t want anything – worse than that, he wants there to be nothing. Suddenly, Lucifer can’t control things. Barbrow just wants to destroy the world.

IGN: What were some of the influences on the demon designs for the Aristocratic rulers of Hell?

Álex de la Iglesia: The classic ones. If I had more time to shoot, I would have tried to make more Bosco creatures. It’s a mixture between classic demons and ones inspired by Clive Barker. I love Hellraiser. I would love to produce one of those movies.

IGN: What is the ratio of practical effects to CGI in those particular demon designs?

Álex de la Iglesia: The idea is to work with masks and makeup effects. After that, we work with animation to retouch. Most of what you see is practical.

30 Coins, Season 2 brings back cast members Eduard Fernández, Megan Montaner, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Macarena Gómez, Pepón Nieto, Cósimo Fusco, Manolo Solo, Nuria González, Javier Bódalo, and Manuel Tallafé. In addition to Paul Giamatti, the new season has also cast Najwa Nimri.
