Batman is among the first heroes to come to mind when it comes to grittiness, but even some of his DC Comics stories manage to end surprisingly dark. The character's influences stem from the grimness of the crime-noir genre, but some of his comic book appearances manage to outdo the emotional and/or physical brutality of landmark titles like The Killing Joke.
