Netflix has released the final trailer for 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Hugo award-winning sci-fi epic from the Game of Thrones showrunners, ahead of its March 21 premiere date.
The chaotic trailer opens with a police car driving to a suburban house, before cutting to an injured woman who ominously tells a partner she needs to tell them something “insane” but “true” which pertains to everyone on Earth.
Then transported back in time to a lonely radar control room, a voiceover reveals that in 1977, radio astronomers — referred to only as “they” — detected a message, which was later dubbed “the WOW signal”. Before cutting back to the present day, the young radio operator can be seen pressing a big red button, which could well be a pivotal moment from the novel which alters the trajectory of the entire human race.

The night sky then flickers on and off and is later blocked out entirely as an unknown object covers the horizon. Over this cryptic backdrop, Liam Cunningham’s character can be heard asking what the WOW signal was trying to communicate, and answered by Rosalind Chao’s character Ye Wenjie with “they are coming”.
Who “they” are is one of the major plot points being explored in the first season of 3 Body Problem. The remainder of the trailer saw a fast paced montage of eclectic scenes which gave further glimpses of the strange virtual reality device and hovering countdown seen in previous clips, while showing humanity spiralling into a state of chaos and potentially war with an unknown foe.
In a climactic interaction towards the end of the two minute trailer, Ye Wenjie can be heard asking Jess Hong’s character Jin Cheng how he hopes to be remembered, to which he replies, “as someone who fought back”.
Netflix's adaptation of Liu Cixin’s 3 Body Problem is the next major project from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, which tells "the story of humanity's first contact with an alien civilization", and explores the societal consequences that such a momentous occasion would have on our fledgling race.
