One of the recurring critiques of Star Trek is how the series, known for its diverse alien species, focuses "too much" on humanity. Putting aside the real-world truth that no extraterrestrial species have yet gotten SAG cards, it's no accident the universe Gene Roddenberry created is so Earth-centric. This criticism is often born from the fact that humanity as 20th- and 21st-Century denizens are painfully aware is nowhere near as noble, curious or empathetic as Star Trek's humanity is. This is a case where the critics have, inadvertently, stumbled onto the very reason the series and its larger universe exists.
