Violence in pop culture is a necessity. As much as people would like to believe otherwise, humans have loved watching violence for entertainment since antiquity. The ancient Greek playwrights would cast enslaved people in their productions as characters that would actually be killed during the course of the play. More famously, the ancient Romans built the Colosseum, a massive arena where gladiators would fight to the death before a cheering audience. As history marched on and the idea of killing real humans for entertainment began to be viewed as barbaric, violence instead was injected into other mediums. Literature, cinema, radio serials, and comics have all been gifted heavy doses of violence, some quite mild, some more intense. For anime, violence is often seen as a sport, with different series attempting to find new and shocking ways of upping the ante. But no anime series today can hold a candle to one of the most hardcore series of all time. There's violence in anime — and then there's Violence Jack.
