Nearly three years after Capcom fell victim to a massive leak that saw thousands of personal data compromised and the premature reveal of games such as Street Fighter 6 and Resident Evil 4 Remake, international law enforcement has finally apprehended the ransomware group responsible.

Spotted by VideoGamesChronicle, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) announced it has taken down the ransomware group Ragnar Locker. Europol said law enforcement from 11 different countries worked together to arrest a "key target" from the group in Paris last week, and searched his home located in Czechia. Five additional suspects located in Spain and Latvia were interviewed, according to Europol.

"This investigation shows that once again international cooperation is the key to taking ransomware groups down," Europol's European Cybercrime Centre head Edvardas Šileris commented. "Prevention and security are improving, however ransomware operators continue to innovate and find new victims."

In November 2020, Capcom confirmed the breach impacted 16,415 people and that financial information and sales reports were compromised. A few days after Capcom disclosed the hack, IGN independently confirmed that some leaked data included a list of then-unannounced games planned for the next several years.
