The feudal Japan-set FX series Shōgun has won 14 Primetime Emmy awards and set a new record for the most earned by a single season of TV.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Shōgun claimed awards including Best Cinematography, Best Casting for a Drama, Best Production Design, Best Special Visual Effects, and many more.

The full list of awards is as follows:

  • Best Casting for a Drama
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Guest Actor in a Drama (for Néstor Carbonell)
  • Best Main Title Design
  • Best Period Costumes
  • Best Period/Fantasy Hairstyling
  • Best Period/Fantasy Makeup
  • Best Picture Editing
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Prosthetic Makeup
  • Best Sound Editing
  • Best Sound Mixing
  • Best Special Visual Effects
  • Best Stunt Performance

Shōgun arrived earlier in 2024 as a retelling of James Clavell's classic novel, which recounts the story of Lord Toranaga as he navigates a complex political battlefield to overcome his rivals.

It earned high praise from critics, with IGN's own review giving Shōgun a 10/10. "FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s Shōgun places characters over combat for a complex and beautiful tale of intrigue set in feudal Japan," we said.

The show was originally planned as just a single season, adapting the entirety of Clavell's novel, but was later renewed for a second and likely a third season too. FX CEO John Landgraf said in July that the team were already working on the second season, meaning it may arrive sooner rather than later too.
