Netflix just quietly gave us a somewhat firmer release window for season 2 of its popular dystopian drama, Squid Game. We now know it'll be out...sometime this year.
Okay, that's not exactly a narrow window, but it's more than what we knew before. Netflix unveiled this information in the middle of its annual earnings report, where it discussed its "big, bold slate for 2024" and listed shows like Bridgerton season 3, Empress season 2, The Diplomat season 2, and yes, Squid Game season 2.
We've known about Squid Game's second season for a while now, and we got a look at some of the returning and new cast members we'd see during Tudum last summer. Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo are all returning from the first season, and we'll see new characters played by Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun join them.
Netflix is unsurprisingly interested in capitalizing on the extremely popular show, and even spun up a reality series based on it that we reviewed as "entertaining" but also "shallow and at times, gross." Meanwhile, Squid Game season 1 itself got a jubilant 9/10 from us, calling it "one of the most exciting series to hit Netflix in some time."
Apart from sneaking in a release window for Squid Game season 2, Netflix's earnings announcement reported 13 million new subscribers and surging revenues as the company capitalizes on its password sharing crackdown and new ad-supported tiers.
