A Peaky Blinders movie is officially on the way at Netflix, and Cillian Murphy is returning to star as Thomas Shelby.
The streaming giant announced the news on social media today, sharing an image of the film’s script and some of the names attached. It will be written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Eastern Promises) and directed by Tom Harper (Peaky Blinders, Wild Rose). Murphy shared a few words regarding the long-awaited confirmation that a movie based on the England-set show is finally on the way.
“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. … It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders,” he said. “This is one for the fans.”

Deadline reports that production on the Peaky Blinders movie is set to begin later this year. Producers attached to the project include Caryn Mandabach, Knight, Murphy, and Guy Heeley. Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason are also on board as executive producers. Many plot details are still under wraps, though Knight told Deadline in 2022 that it would be set during World War II.
"I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen," Knight added today. "It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war."
Harper also shared a few words on the Peaky Blinders movie: “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”
Murphy starred in the Peaky Blinders TV series from its beginning in 2013 to the end of its sixth and final season in 2022. It’s a standout project in his career, but the actor has kept busy with other movies and shows, too. An obvious example of his recent work is last year’s Oppenheimer, which resulted in the actor walking away with an Oscar win for Actor in a Leading Role. He’s also gearing up to work on the long-in-development movie sequel, 28 Years Later, as both an actor and executive producer.
Meanwhile, Peaky Blinders is reportedly set to continue in more ways than one. Following the conclusion of the original show a few years back, it’s said the series’ universe could continue in the form of two spinoffs: one set in 20th-century Boston and one focused on Polly Gray.
