A Robocop TV series is getting closer and closer to a reality.

According to Variety, Amazon MGM Studios has named Peter Ocko writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the currently in-development show. In addition, James Wan, the prolific producer and filmmaker behind franchises like Saw, The Conjuring, and Insidious, is set to produce through his Atomic Monster banner.

Variety also published a logline for the sci-fi series: "A giant tech conglomerate collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime — a police officer who’s part man, part machine."

That logline doesn't deviate too much from the general premise of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original, which starred Peter Weller as the titular cyborg law enforcer. While it saw mixed reviews upon release, it's since been critically reevaluated, earning a place in sci-fi film history and in '80s cinema at large.

It was a financial success too, earning $53.4 million worldwide and kicking off a franchise that would go on to include two sequels, a 2014 remake, several TV shows, video games, and more.

We first learned about the possibility of a Robocop TV show last year, when a Deadline report revealed that Amazon Studios was mulling various remakes or spinoffs based on beloved IP after it acquired MGM Studios in 2022. Those properties included not only Robocop, but Legally Blonde (which has since moved forward in development as well), Stargate, Fame, Barbershop, The Magnificent Seven, Pink Panther, and The Thomas Crown Affair. That report also added that Robocop was being considered for some sort of film adaptation or spinoff, in addition to a TV series, but we haven't heard any updates on that.
