IGN can exclusively reveal the new trailer for the third and final season of the critically acclaimed animated series Hilda, which premieres on Netflix on December 7. You can watch the trailer via the player above or the embed below. Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us, Game of Thrones) returns as the voice of the titular blue-haired young adventurer.
Based on Luke Pearson’s graphic novel series of the same name, the animated fantasy show draws on elements of Scandinavian folklore to tell the coming-of-age tale of an intrepid young girl and her complicated relationship with her mother.
According to its official synopsis, the final season sees Hilda “lured into a mystical realm that will lead her to a deeper understanding of her family’s hidden history and long-buried truths about herself.” The 8-episode third season concludes with a 70-minute series finale.
Bella Ramsey believes now is the right time to bring Hilda’s journey to an end. “ I think a lot of series make the mistake of going on too long and doing too many seasons and then it just ends up that the story keeps getting repeated. So I think it's just the perfect time for it to wrap up. And that could be this really beautiful, succinct three-season thing.”
“All the loose ends have sort of been tied up and it's time for it to finish, which I'm obviously sad about because I've been doing Hilda since I was quite young. But I do think it's the right decision,” Ramsey told IGN in a recent phone interview.
The official synopsis did promise that “a deeper understanding of her family’s hidden history” would be revealed this season so one new character introduced is Hilda’s Great Aunt Astrid, who didn’t appear in Pearson’s original tales. Astrid is voiced by Miriam Margolyes OBE, who fans may remember as Professor Pomona Sprout in the Harry Potter films.
“I think they're kindred spirits and I don't know, I think Aunt Astrid to Hilda is this person that she just ... What's the word? Idolizes,” Ramsey explains. “She's just this cool, weird old lady and I think that's who Hilda will be in the future. Yeah, I think Aunt Astrid and Hilda are sort of the same person, just generations apart.”
Looking back on a show they have worked on since they were an adolescent, Ramsey says they hope fans of this “feel-good show” are pleased with how the series ends.
“It has meant so much to so many people. I mean, having people come up to me and be like, ‘Oh, I watched Hilda.’ Like people that I'd never expect to watch the show. So I just hope people just feel joy out of it and I think as they have done throughout the rest of the seasons, I just hope that this ends on a high note for everybody and that people feel satisfied with the story and how it's ended. And yeah, everybody's where they meant to be and stuff was all worked out.”
