Female protagonists and supporting gals were mostly reduced to one-dimensional side characters in almost all anime genres. Only a few good shonen anime dared to rise above the tropes and feature well-written female characters who actually contributed to the plot. For instance, Erza Scarlet was a prominent player in Fairy Tail who was not only slightly more potent than the MC, but also had a distinct personality and a solid backstory. Ladies in Bleach, Claymore, One Piece, and more have held out the reputation of female leads in anime with their strong characterization.
