What Happened to Thorin's Company After The Hobbit, Explained

In J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins joined Thorin II Oakenshield and his Company of Dwarves on their quest to reclaim their ancestral home of Erebor. The Dwarves had abandoned the kingdom after the great dragon Smaug took up residence in the Lonely Mountain. While the future king Thorin was the most important of the Dwarves, they all had significant parts to play in the story, and Bilbo became close friends with them. Their mission was successful, but three of these Dwarves — namely Thorin and his nephews, Fíli and Kíli — died during the Battle of the Five Armies near the end of The Hobbit.
