FLCL Grunge, the fourth season in the FLCL franchise, released its first episode last week, featuring a colorful, occasionally neon-infused, cell-shaded, 2D art style that looks quite nice. It's reminiscent of last year's Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Unfortunately, much like FLCL Progressive and FLCL Alternative, FLCL Grunge is attempting to build on the brand of the original FLCL (2000), creating an impossible task for themselves where viewers and critics will diminish it through comparison.
