Hyperkin, the gaming hardware company known for its unique gaming controllers and retro consoles, announced its next handheld, the Mega 95, which plays Sega Genesis and Mega Drive cartridges.
As one of two of its new products announced at CES 2024, the Mega 95 looks like a large Genesis controller with a 5-inch display that can toggle between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios with a button. The device is similar to Hyperkin's previous handhelds in the SupaBoy series, a line of devices that played SNES and Super Famicom cartridges on the go.
Yet the biggest selling point for the Mega 95 compared to the SupaBoy handhelds is that Hyperkin includes a docking station with the Mega 95's packaging. The docking station allows you to play games at 720p resolution on a TV and has two controller outputs, as shown in the image below.
Hyperkin previously made a retro device that plays Sega Genesis and Mega Drive cartridges in the past, most notably the MegaRetroN HD. Yet this is the first time Hyperkin has made a portable solution for someone to dust off their Sonic 3 cartridge and play it on the go instead of emulating the game on a handheld PC like Steam Deck. Of course, this is a great alternative for those with these cartridges who want to play on the go but do not own or want to buy a Nintendo Switch plus a copy of Sonic Origins.
Hyperkin has not announced a release date or price for the Mega 95, but the Hyperkin SupaBoy is retailing for $119.99, so Hyperkin may keep the Mega 95 around the same price point.
