Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is one of anime’s most popular properties, yet there’s a different flavor to each of the franchise’s respective series. Dragon Ball Z turns up the action and is the series that most viewers initially stumble upon, but the original Dragon Ball adopts more of a gag comedy aesthetic. Dragon Ball still builds suspenseful battles, mature situations, and even death, but it’s a gradual process. Goku is just a child when Dragon Ball begins and the series embraces his wide-eyed wonder and juvenile nature towards the wide world that he discovers.
