Tim Burton may be set to direct a remake of the 1958 classic Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman for Warner Bros., according to a new report from Deadline.
In addition to Burton, Deadline reports that Gillian Flynn, the author and screenwriter behind thrillers like Gone Girl, Sharp Objects, and Dark Places, is attached to write the script.
According to another report from Variety, it's currently unclear how closely this reimagining will stick to the plot of the original, which followed a wealthy heiress (Allison Hayes) after an encounter with an alien turns her into a giantess. It wasn't just her suddenly massive size that was an issue, however, as it also complicated her already tumultuous relationship with her cheating husband.
While reviews were mixed at the time, Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman has gone on to become something of a cult classic, and sequel talks were sparked at the time due to its lean $88,000 budget. Various parodies have cropped up over the years, including Roger Corman's 2012 film Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader.
The deal would mark another collaboration between Burton and Warner Bros., where the director is currently working on the long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel. That sequel just revealed its official title earlier today - Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - and is still slated to come out on September 6, 2024.
Flynn, too, has worked with Warner Bros. in the past, having adapted her own novel Sharp Objects into a limited series for HBO, which earned her an Emmy nomination. She also adapted her hit novel Gone Girl for David Fincher's 2014 film adaptation.
