As summer transitions to fall, there are a number of upcoming comic book releases that have us stoked, and few are as exciting as the Image Comics graphic novel We Called Them Giants. This upcoming book reunites writer Kieron Gillen and artist Stephanie Hans, whose past collaborations incldue Journey Into Mystery and Die.

IGN can exclusively debut a new preview of We Called Them Giants. Get a closer look in the slideshow gallery below:

Image bills We Called Them Giants as a mashup of The Last of Us and The Iron Giant. The book focuses on a girl who awakens in a postapocalyptic landscape to discover giants now walk among us. Here's the official description for We Called Them Giants:

A poignant, romantic, and devastating story of a young girl who wakes up to find her world has turned upside down. Lori wakes to find the streets empty. Everyone has gone. Or at least, nearly everyone. She’s thrown into a world where she has to scrape by in the ruins of civilization, nearly starving, hiding from gangs when… They arrive.

"After finishing DIE, Stephanie and I wanted to do something smaller and self-contained. A short, beautiful graphic novel where we can both stretch in ways we've never done before," Gillen tells IGN. "The luxury to take a whole story and just polish it to where we wanted is not something you get in monthly comics, so this was a luxury. We had the image of a small hardback book with a spine a girl would find in a library and devour. That kind of magical book."

Gillen continues, "Story-wise, We Called Them Giants came from the isolation of the Covid lockdowns, and me in my house, with my cats, thinking about the weirdness of how these two alien species get on (or not). That's the heart of the book - communication across a chasm of comprehension, at the end of the world. A girl. A giant. Understanding or not. And love. It's a book about love, and the difficulties of that. It's also a book about hitting things with a hockey stick covered in barbed-wire. It's kind of Pixar does The Walking Dead, with a little of Ted Hughes' original Iron Giant book (adapted beautifully, but the original is far creepier)."

We Called Them Giants will be released on October 30, 2024. You can preorder a copy on Amazon now.
