The late Jim Henson believed that puppets could tell adult as well as children's stories. But while he made a few moves in that direction -- notably with projects like Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal -- he died before he could fully realize it. However, his son Brian took the ball and ran with it, joining forces with TV veteran Rockne S. O'Bannon to create Farscape. The show first premiered in 1999 and looked like nothing else in sci-fi. With the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises sticking resolutely to formula and new arrivals like The Matrix shying away from space opera, it made a strong impression in a very short amount of time.
