The creators of the incoming Community movie can't seem to decide on how far along its production is, though it appears to be pretty far.
Speaking to Variety, creator Dan Harmon said the script is "almost done" despite star Donald Glover asserting it was wholly finished earlier in February. The mistake was seemingly Harmon's fault, however, as he told Glover himself of the script's supposed completion.
"I can confirm Donald Glover’s report that I told him the script was done, but I will also say Donald’s sources are so unreliable because the script is always ‘almost done,'" Harmon joked. "What can I tell you about it — it’s set on the campus of Greendale Community College. I’m super excited about it, and we’re almost done."
The Community movie has faded in and out of Hollywood consciousness over the past several years, though Glover said the cast now just has scheduling conflicts to contend with. But he's "all in" if they can make it work.
Fans have held out hope for a Community film ever since Danny Pudi's Abed Nadir said the now famous line: "Six seasons and a movie." The six seasons of Community wrapped in 2015, and while a film seemed increasingly unlikely as time went on, Peacock made the surprise order for a film in September 2022.
Joel McHale, who played Jeff Winger in Community, said in January 2023 the film was due to begin filming that summer but the dual writer and actor strikes shut those plans down. Hopes for the film were sent into a tailspin once more, with even Harmon expressing concerns over things not working out.
Glover made clear he's eager to star in the Community movie though, despite being one of three main cast members who eventually left the show, so fans will be hoping the other stars are just as eager and can make it work.
