If you want to experience Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire in 70mm – a week before it debuts on Netflix – you may have a chance… but only if you live close enough to four select theaters.
Variety reports on Tuesday that Snyder’s sci-fi epic has set a one-week theatrical run from Dec. 15-21 before it streams on Netflix on Dec. 22. If you live in Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, or London, you can catch it at the following theaters exclusively:
- Egyptian Theatre (Los Angeles)
- Paris Theater (New York City)
- TIFF Bell Lightbox (Toronto)
- Prince Charles Cinema (London)
To be clear, it’s pretty common for Netflix have limited theatrical debuts for their films ahead of their streaming premieres, especially when it comes its Oscar contenders, as the Academy Awards requires at least a week in theaters in order to qualify for nominations. In an unusual movie, last year’s Rian Johnson sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery had a much larger theatrical run, showing in major chains like AMC, Regal, and Cinemark for a week, but Netflix hasn’t replicated the experiment since.
It's also not surprising to see the Paris Theater and the Egyptian Theatre on the list, since Netflix owns both. The streaming service is currently overseeing an extensive renovation of the Egyptian, which will open its doors again this week with David Fincher's The Killer.
Still, what may be most interesting here is the 70mm aspect. Considering how eager fans might be to immerse themselves in Snyder’s new sci-fi world, we wouldn’t be surprised if tickets were snatched up quickly.
Snyder has continued to drum up anticipation for Rebel Moon, recently confirming that it shares the same universe as his Army of the Dead. Rebel Moon will release in two parts, with Part 2: The Scargiver releasing on April 19, 2024.
