Taika Waititi Discusses What a Potential Thor 5 Would Need to Have

Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has shared a few thoughts on what he thinks a potential Thor 5 would need, and one of those things is a villain stronger than Hela.

As reported by Screen Rant, Waititi was interviewed for Titan's upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder The Official Movie Special book and spoke a few words about what might be next for our favorite Asgardian. While the book won't be released until September 19, one of Waititi's quotes should excite those hoping Thor 5 actually happens.

"What is left to do to him? It's got to be something that feels like it's carrying on with the evolution of the character, but still in a very fun way and still giving him things to come up against that feel like they're building on the obstacles that he has to overcome," Waititi said. "I don't think we can have a villain that's weaker than Hela. I feel like we need to step up from there and add a villain that's somehow more formidable.”

That would be a tall order, considering she was not only Odin's daughter and Thor and Loki's brother, but also the Asgardian Goddess of Death and executioner. If Hela was who Waititi specifically mentioned, this would also mean this new villain would have to also be more powerful than Thor: Love and Thunder's Gorr the God Butcher.

Waititi would also want to lean more toward the mythology where Thor comes from. This would see him face off against "more and more outlandish and crazy beasts, monsters, and aliens" that are "big, inventive, and colorful."

Thor's last adventure - Thor: Love and Thunder - was released in 2022 and had a mixed reception, which left a sour taste in some after the mostly universal praise of Thor: Ragnarok. We loved Ragnarok here at IGN and ranked it the third-best film of the entire Infinity Saga of the MCU.

In our Thor: Love and Thunder review, we said it was "held back by a cookie-cutter plot and a mishandling of supporting characters, but succeeds as the MCU's first romantic comedy thanks to Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman's chemistry."

We here at IGN asked our audience back in July 2022 if they wanted Thor 5, and 42.4% of you led the way with saying you'd be up for it.

For more, check out Waititi's previous comments on how he'd only direct Thor 5 under one condition, everything announced to be upcoming for the MCU so far, and Thor actor Chris Hemsworth's words on Love and Thunder becoming "too silly," and how he is ready to "close the book" on Thor.
