In 1992, DC Comics published the iconic "Death of Superman" saga, which saw the Kryptonian monster Doomsday arrive at Earth to kill the Man of Steel. Despite the best efforts of the Justice League and fellow Metropolis-based heroes, the result was the titular demise of Superman, as well as his attacker. Since the event concluded with the hero's return, Clark Kent has been left with many great heroes primed to take up his mantle should his death ever prove permanent.
