James Gunn’s DCU Is Reportedly Close to Finding Its Supergirl

James Gunn's DCU may be on the verge of casting its Supergirl, according to a report.

THR reports that both Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly were involved in screen tests for the role yesterday. Supergirl's character is planned to be introduced in Gunn's Superman: Legacy before getting her own movie in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The film has already found a screenwriter in Ana Nogueira and is based on the comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

Alcock is perhaps best-known for her recent role as young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO's Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, for which she was nominated for a Critics Choice Television Award. Donnelly, meanwhile, is no stranger to the role of Supergirl, having voiced the role for the animated films Legion of Super-Heroes and the trilogy of films Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Previously, many expected Sasha Calle to reprise her role as Supergirl from The Flash after Calle mentioned she'd met with DC Studios leaders about it, but that no longer seems to be in the cards. That's not shocking, given that Gunn's DCU is seemingly uninterested in bringing back other pre-existing DC stars.

Currently, Superman: Legacy is planned for a July 11, 2025 release date, with the film having remained on track for that date in the midst of writing and acting strikes last year.

James Gunn's reboot of the DCU comes bearing heavy expectations after a run of underperforming DCEU films, but we'll have to wait a bit longer to see if it can measure up to everything both shareholders and fans expect of it. It is expected to kick off with Superman: Legacy in 2025, followed by The Authority, Bat-family film The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing. Only Superman: Legacy currently has a release window.
