When series creator Gene Roddenberry envisioned a future to contain his sci-fi epic, he wanted it to be one where humanity had "grown up." However, Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks both highlight how even in a utopian future, people can still be flawed. Despite what some Star Trek purists might say, it's the kind of realism in sci-fi that Roddenberry would likely approve of.
