Pokémon TCG Pocket is getting a new expansion on Jan. 30, preceded by the long-anticipated trading feature, which will launch one day prior, on Jan. 29. The Pokémon Company debuted the new expansion, Space-Time Showdown, in a short YouTube video that shows off the two new booster packs featuring Legendary Pokémon Dialga and Palkia.
The Pokémon Company said the cards inside the booster packs have “new and unique” illustrations — and will feature Pokémon showing up in Pokémon TCG Pocket for the first time. The Pokémon Company didn’t say how many cards total will be added to the game with the new booster packs; so far, it’s just six: Dialga ex, Palkia ex, Lucario, Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup.
As for trading, the new feature was detailed last week, with a short paragraph dedicated to it in Thursday’s news release: “Players will need to use two new items, trade hourglasses and trade tokens, in order to trade cards with a rarity of ♦1-4 and ★1 with cards of the same rarity. Upon release of the new feature, players will be able to trade certain cards from the Genetic Apex and Mythical Island expansions, with plans currently in place to expand the lineup of tradeable cards in future updates.”
A Pokémon TCG Pocket representative confirmed to Polygon that cards from the new booster pack are not eligible for trading, but said The Pokémon Company plans to expand the lineup of tradeable cards. Like anything else in Pokémon TCG Pocket, you’ll have to spend a certain type of currency or item to use the trading functionality; this isn’t explicitly detailed in the news release, but accompanying images give a look at the new items: hourglasses and trade tokens. It appears to work like this: You’ll need to amass tokens that you’ll then need to spend to trade, while the feature is also on a refillable timer, like with Wonder Picks. It looks like you’ll be able to use the new Trade Hourglasses to refill that meter, as you would with Wonder Hourglasses.
Pokémon TCG Pocket was released in October and has been a commercial success for The Pokémon Company. It announced in December that the game had been downloaded 60 million times since its launch. Per AppMagic, an analytics platform, the game has surpassed $200 million in revenue, $12 million of which was raked in during the first few days.
