The slow trickle of Nintendo Switch 2 information continues apace as we wait for the official Direct presentation on April 2. Today’s news includes potential amiibo support, multiple ways to charge the console, and faster download speeds.
As spotted by The Verge, multiple Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filings indicate the Nintendo Switch 2 will include support for near-field communications (NFC) technology, one rechargeable USB-C port on the top of the console and one on the bottom, and the ability to connect to Wi-Fi 6 networks (the original Switch only supported up to Wi-Fi 5).
Nintendo released a total of 223 amiibo over the lifespan of the Switch, with applications ranging from adding unique transformations to Super Mario Maker levels, to spawning treasure chests in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Seeing as the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible, the inclusion of NFC should ensure that the dozens of games that supported amiibo on Switch won’t miss those features when players upgrade. And much like its predecessor, the Switch 2 will interact with NFC devices via the right Joy-Con.
It’s obvious that new consoles will have superior visuals and upgraded performance, but it’s little things like not rendering old add-ons useless and faster download speeds that truly improve player experiences in the long run.
Switch 2 is planned to launch with a new Mario Kart game sometime later this year.
