Netflix has released a set of first-look images for its Terminator Zero anime series ahead of its premiere on August 29.
Created and executive produced by Mattson Tomlin and executive produced by Skydance and animation studio Production I.G, Terminator Zero will drop all eight episodes at once on Thursday, August 29, introducing audiences to a new group of characters, some of whom appear in the first-look images for the sci-fi series.
Instead of John or Sarah Connor, viewers will get to know a forward-thinking scientist called Malcolm Lee, who, according to the official synopsis for the show, "works to launch a new A.I. system designed to compete with Skynet's impending attack on humanity" but also must navigate "the moral complexities of his creation."
Caught between the year 2022, where "a future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines," and 1997, where "the A.I. known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity," is a brave soldier who will travel back in time to protect Lee from potential danger.
It sounds like Lee will need all the help he can get as he finds himself being "hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future, which forever alters the fate of his three children." That assassin is undoubtedly a Terminator, as one of the images shows a suited figure with a torn face that reveals the ominous red eye of a cyborg.
The first teaser for Terminator Zero didn't reveal any footage of the series, so these images offer our best look yet at the anime ahead of its Netflix debut. It is the latest addition to the franchise that launched in 1984 with the original Terminator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and spawned five more movies, plus a spin-off TV series.
