It's only natural to assume that a film made almost 35 years ago will have some poorly aged scenes, regardless of how beloved it is. This is just an unavoidable circumstance brought on by the passage of time and changes in social attitudes and preferences. No movie is immune to it, not even Heathers. Still, the fact that some contemporary viewers find the cherished picture distasteful shouldn't come as a surprise since its plot centers on school shootings and suicide (which are currently and justifiably sensitive topics). It also doesn't help that some of the dialogue contains homophobic rhetoric. However, as a 2016 interview with Heathers' writer, Daniel Waters, conveys, the picture was meant to be an "anti-John Hughes" and Stanley Kubrick-styled satire, so it shouldn't be a shock that the movie is gritty and sordid, either. Heathers, nonetheless, still has some merit despite its current drawbacks.
