It's official: Netflix has announced it has renewed Squid Game: The Challenge for a second season.
While no release window was given, Netflix did reveal that it has opened up applications for those interested in potentially being cast for the second season of the reality game show. The first season premiered late last month, with the season one finale released today.
Announced in 2022, Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality game show based on Netflix's massively successful South Korean survival series, where 456 players compete against each other for a lump sum cash prize of $4.56 million.
While some who watched Squid Game think the concept of turning the fictional game show into a reality game show seems dubious, the series has performed well for Netflix. The streaming service published a report of the Top 10 TV shows for the week of November 27, with Squid Game: The Challenge leading the English TV shows category with 11.4 million views.
Yet, Squid Game: The Challenge has also been scrutinized for its alleged unsafe filming environments. Some contestants called the production an "inhumane disaster," and others required medical attention due to injuries they accrued during filming. Most recently, several contestants threatened to sue the production company, alleging it failed to meet the proper health and safety standards during filming.
In our review of Squid Game: The Challenge, which we gave 6/10, we said: "Squid Game: The Challenge is a shallow and at times, gross reality show that somehow still manages to be entertaining."
