Relatable villains have, for a long time now, been all the rage. As audiences have refused to settle for the Manichean dichotomy of "good" and "evil," movie villains have become much more rich, well-rounded characters. The result is not that all villains are worth championing – plenty are still evil for the sake of – but that many villains are, above all else, interesting.
