El Conde Literally Humanizes Vampires

When it comes to vampires in horror movies or its subgenres (like horror comedy), the character type is typically conveyed in two ways: either an unremorseful creature that's more a ferocious beast than anything else or a demi-god-esque being that exists beyond the petty issues of humankind. Because of this, vampires are generally seen as graceful and cunning predators or near-indestructible wild animals. Granted, some pictures, like Daybreakers or the well-received Blade franchise, contain a mixture of these archetypes, and Netflix's Chilean film El Conde ("The Count") follows suit in that regard. The movie, however, also subverts that dichotomy in some surprising and astonishingly refreshing but hilarious ways. In short, the character's lingering attachment to human traits, how his powers are depicted and what he decides to do with his eternal life separate El Conde and its main bloodsucking protagonist from their predecessors.
