Picture it: April Fool's Day 2008. IGN decided to partake in the day of practical jokes and hoaxes by making, with the help of production company Rainfall Films, a fake movie trailer for a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. Now imagine our surprise that over 15 years later, Nintendo announced that it is currently working on a live-action Zelda movie, so you could say we predicted such a film would (eventually) become a reality.
Our April Fool's Day prank was a less than three-minute-long trailer teasing a live-action movie adaptation based on Nintendo's popular action-adventure franchise. The trailer saw Link played by actor J.R. Killgrew, while actress Camille C. Brown played Zelda, and Gregory Lee Kenyon portrayed the primary series villain Ganondorf.
All jokes aside, maybe this is some idea of what this project could look like. Nintendo made a surprise announcement on Tuesday confirming to the public and its investors that it was finally making a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. Shigeru Miyamoto will serve as producer, while Wes Ball, who previously directed The Maze Runner, will serve as the director.
The announcement comes as The Legend of Zelda series has had a great year on the gaming front. Its most recent entry, Tears of the Kingdom, has seen tremendous success, with Nintendo reporting in August that sales surpassed 18 million units. Tears of the Kingdom producer Eiji Aonuma and director Hidemaro Fujibayashi expressed interest earlier in the year in making a Zelda flick following the success of The Super Mario Bros. movie, which was released earlier this year and becoming the 10th animated film in history to cross $1 billion at the global box office.
While there is no casting information or what the film's plot will be centered on, we do know that Nintendo is teaming up with Sony Pictures to make the film a reality.
