The AirTag uses Bluetooth 5.0 to pinpoint a general location of your lost item. However, if your iPhone model has a U1 chip with Ultra Wideband, there is a "Precision Finding" mode that can give you a numerical distance as well as a directional pointer when your lost item is in range.
