Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, the documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to critical acclaim, has set a theatrical release in the U.S. - but just for two days, at least for now.

Warner Bros. announced in a press release today that DC Studios will be collaborating with Fathom Events to release Super/Man in theaters across the U.S. on September 21, 2024. An encore theatrical release will happen a few days later on September 25, which also happens to be the late Reeve's birthday.

Further details, like locations and ticket information, will be available on Fathom's website. WB also notes in its announcement today that Super/Man's international release will follow the U.S. one, although we're still waiting for more details on that. We'd also expect it to be available on HBO and Max at some point.

As mentioned, Super/Man premiered at Sundance earlier this year, where it was quickly acquired by Warner Bros. Obviously, WB is a fitting home for the documentary, given that the studio is not only the current home of DC Studios, but also where Reeve and director Richard Donner found success with their Superman films.

The documentary charts Reeve's breakthrough into acting and his rise as the Man of Steel, as well as the aftermath of a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down. It features a trove of behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Reeve's three adult children, as well as celebrities who had worked with Reeves. (I was able to catch Super/Man out of Sundance and trust me, it's a tear-jerker - you can read my thoughts here).

“On behalf of not only Warner Bros., but also my colleagues at DC, HBO and CNN, it’s an honor to be a part of bringing Christopher Reeve and his singular legacy to audiences again," Jeff Goldstein, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, said in the announcement. "It was at this very studio where he made us all believe a man could fly, and this documentary reveals what made him a true hero, on- and off-screen. Partnering with our friends at Fathom Events to deliver this very special film to the big screen was an opportunity we could not pass up.”

“Everyone knows that Superman is a superhero, but I’m eager for audiences to discover the REAL superhero behind Superman," added Fathom Events’ CEO Ray Nutt. "This film is an extraordinary story that takes a deep dive into the man Christopher Reeve really was and the courage he displayed. We’re looking forward to working with our partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. to bring this inspiring film to theatres nationwide.”
