Rated (at the time of writing) 4.9 on Crunchyroll, 9.1 on MyAnimeList, and even 8.9 on IMDb -- where the audience isn't necessarily made up of anime enthusiasts — Frieren was crowned one of the best shows of 2023, if not the best overall. It may come as a shock to many — despite the success of its source material, after all, Frieren's tone and pace are light years away from those of the highest-grossing shows of recent years, action-packed whirlwinds the likes of Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen.
