Final Fantasy 16 director Hiroshi Takai has said future games in the franchise will "likely" come to PC at launch as publisher Square Enix pursues its multiplatform strategy.

Takai was asked by GamesRadar if future Final Fantasy games would come to PC day one, and replied with not a definitive answer but certainly a suggestive one. "I think it's possible," he said. "Probably even likely."

Final Fantasy 16 was originally a PlayStation 5 exclusive but was finally officially announced for PC after a lot of back and forth, with a September 17, 2024 release date. Producer Naoki Yoshida previously hinted it could come to other platforms too, but nothing has been announced yet.

Square Enix is eager to double down on multiplatform releases regardless, which would meaning bringing Final Fantasy beyond its traditional PlayStation releases and to the likes of Xbox, PC, and perhaps even Nintendo.

The decision was made following a huge fall in profits announced in May 2024, when Square Enix declared it would "shift to a multiplatform strategy" through a three year plan to reboot the company.

Final Fantasy 17 is still a long way away, of course, as while it's almost certainly in development at Square Enix the publisher hasn't mentioned it at all yet. And as the previous game came out recently in 2023, fans likely won't hear more for years.
