Panasonic has made literal vaporware by creating a hologram style video display with its Silky Fine Mist technology, though it probably won't be available to consumers for a long time.
As reported by The Verge, Panasonic has debuted a new use for its cooling technology. First released in Japan in 2019 as a way to counteract increasingly hot summers, the Silky Fine Mist product is now being used to display digital images as if floating in air.
Branded as Green AC, the tech uses a "unique two fluid mist nozzle" that mixes air and water to create a mist so fine it doesn't feel wet to the touch. At approximately 10 microns, the mist evaporates so quickly that it can't be felt at all.
A few years later and Panasonic has had the idea to project images onto the translucent wall of mist with an effect straight out of science fiction. Alongside the Panasonic logo, the tech was recently showed off with an image of the globe rotating, a fish swimming through thin air, and more.
In true vaporware fashion, however, the mist-based display seemingly won't be available easily for a while. The one system available in North America looks more like a 1990s generator than something from the far future at three feet wide, three feet tall, and 420 pounds.
