Teams that brought together all a publisher's greatest heroes have been a part of comics since the Golden Age, and the Avengers followed in the footsteps of teams like DC's Justice Society and Justice League. However, like everything Marvel, the Avengers had their own flair and a tagline — "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" — that told everyone what they were about.
