Despite fan-demand for Spider-Man to appear in Prime Video animated series Invincible, it’s unlikely to happen, creator Robert Kirkman has said.
In an interview for IGN Fan Fest, below, Kirkman cast doubt on the possibility of characters from other brands appearing in the Invincible series.
“Would that we could pull the powers of Amazon and Disney and Marvel and everybody together!” Kirkman said. “Wouldn’t that be an amazing thing? But I wouldn’t count on it. And that’s not a tease.”
While the Invincible show looks set to stick to Invincible characters, the comic book upon which it is based has crossed over with a number of famous superheroes and teams, including with The Tick, Batman, The Avengers, and the aforementioned Spider-Man.
This has fuelled speculation that Spider-Man in particular could turn up in the Invincible show at some point, speculation that was boosted recently when voice actor Josh Keaton confirmed he voices a character in Invincible season 2 but stopped short of saying who. Keaton is well-known for voicing Spider-Man in various media, including The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series.
Elsewhere in the interview, Kirkman discusses the character arc of the villanous Omni-Man, who, he insists, is not an evil character despite all the terrible things he's done. "There’s a big arc that he’s gonna be going through," Kirkman said. "There’s a lot of talk of Amazon and their evil Supermen with Homelander and Omni-Man. There’s a big difference in what we’re trying to do with Omni-Man, and who he is as a character. It’s reductive to just refer to him as an evil Superman. He is not an evil character."
And Kirkman provided an update on the Invincible live-action movie, which sounds pretty far away. Kirkman joked that Steven Yeun, who voices Mark in the animated show, would be a better fit for Cecil Stedman than Invincible himself by the time the movie comes out.
"It’s going through the pipeline slowly," Kirkman said. "The strikes put a pause on things for a while. We’re just now getting back into that. It’s all very exciting. It’s not something we’re rushing. It’s something we definitely want to get right.
"Now that the show is out and the animated series is doing well, we’re trying to figure out ways to make sure it stands apart, works in tandem with the show to show how cool Invincible is and doesn’t detract from it in any way. There’s a lot of maneuvering that has to go into that, so it is taking a little bit of time.
"I can’t wait for everyone to see Steven Yeun as Cecil Stedman!"
Is it that far down the line that he would be as old as Cecil, we asked?
"It’s entirely possible!" Kirkman replied. "Maybe not."
Invincible Season 2 Part 2 kicks off on Prime Video on March 14.
