Characters fans commonly dislike are not a rarity in anime. From obnoxious sidekicks, like My Hero Academia’s Mineta, who never seem to grow out of their flaws, to the self-insert protagonist, like Sword Art Online’s Kirito, whose magnificence is exaggerated to the point of obnoxiousness, there’s no shortage of heroes hated by fans despite the author’s intentions to make them admirable.
