Warner Bros. announced a couple of release date changes on Tuesday, bumping up Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire by two weeks and removing Bong Joon-Ho's Mickey 17 from the schedule.
The New Empire will now debut on March 29, 2024, instead of its previously announced April 12, 2024, date. Interestingly, the news comes just hours after Sony announced that it was moving Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire from March 29 to March 22, removing some competition (and another "empire") from that date.
March 29, 2024, was once the release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, but that highly anticipated trilogy-ender was delayed indefinitely amid the writers' and actors' strikes over the summer.
In worse news, Mickey 17 is now "undated" per Warner Bros.' announcement. The latest from Oscar-winner Bong was previously set to debut on The New Empire's new date, March 29, but is now likely delayed. The first trailer for the sci-fi film, starring Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, was revealed in December 2022, but we've heard little about it since then.
Mickey 17 is based on the Edward Ashton novel Mickey7, which follows an "expendable" - aka, someone sent on dangerous (often deadly) missions. If that expendable dies, a new body regenerates with most of the old memories intact.
Today's news is rough for fans of Bong, who've been anxiously awaiting the Snowpiercer director's follow-up to Oscar Best Picture winner Parasite. But in a slightly reassuring development, THR reports that a new release date is expected to be announced "soon."
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, meanwhile, is a direct sequel to 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong, and will see the two iconic Titans teaming up against a new threat. For more on that, check out our exclusive chat with director Adam Wingard.
