Which Graphics Card is Right For Me?

As a general rule of thumb, you want to size your gaming rig based on (1) the resolution, not size, of your monitor and (2) the games you play. A 4K display has 2.25 times more pixels than a QHD (2560x1440) display and 4 times more pixels than a 1080p (1920x1080) monitor. Simply put, the more pixels on your monitor, the more power your GPU needs. Some games are also more performance intensive than other games, but that's often scalable by tweaking your settings. This is a rough recommendation:

  • 1080p - RTX 3050 Ti to RTX 3060 Ti (RX 6600M to RX 6700M)
  • QHD - RTX 3070 to RTX 4080 (RX 6700M to RX 6900M XT)
  • 4K - RTX 4080 to RTX 4090

Gaming PC vs Gaming Laptop?

In the past, gaming laptops lagged behind gaming PCs in performance. However, the gap has significantly narrowed in recent years. While gaming PCs still offer more power for the money, gaming laptops no longer carry the same stigma. Most competent gaming laptops easily handle 1080p gaming, and with the latest GPUs, 1440p or even 4K gaming is now possible.

The newest mobile RTX 4090, for example, surpasses the desktop RTX 3080, a card capable of 4K gaming. For gamers who travel, a gaming laptop is undoubtedly the best choice. If you're deciding between a gaming laptop and a gaming PC, consider your priorities. For more details, check out our in-depth article on the gaming laptop vs. gaming desktop dilemma.
